Not-So-Brief Backstory: With a childhood like SJ's, it's no wonder he's so screwed up. At age four, he and his parents were locked in a mental asylum. He watched the place burn down, with his parents still inside of it, at age five. After that, his grandparents in rural Texas took him in. They were drunks and all around horrible people, and wasted no opportunity to treat him like dirt. In his teenage years, he discovered that they were witches. Not the crystal-waving type, either. The scary diabolist type. At age seventeen, he committed his first murders. His "victims" were his grandparents. The Malleus Maleficarum caught wind of his deeds, both because he succeeded where their witch-hunters failed and because his late father was one of their number, and they offered SJ membership within their ranks. Strings were pulled, and SJ Stampler became one of the Shadow Congregation, fighting the good fight against the minions of darkness.
Or so they thought. Deep down, SJ knew it was bullshit. He didn't believe in God, or human goodness. He was in it for the thrill of killing, and the chance to get back at the world for what it did to him. For thirty years he lived a triple life, as a travel writer, a Catholic vigilante, and a sick-minded serial killer. Eventually, he began to get sloppy with his alibis, and the Malleus Maleficarum sensed his less-than-holy motives. They sent him on a wild goose chase in a foreign country, only to abandon him and hope he would be killed. That never happened. By the time they located him again, he'd been an accomplice to a vengeful child of Asmodeus named Ashe Vega. They gave him one last chance to redeem himself. He accepted.
